DRAWING TIPS
- Starting on a new drawing you should take much time in selecting a great reference photo. Not only does the photo have to be clear and large but it needs to be detailed and interesting, it should also have excellent contrast.
- Try not to touch an area of the paper, because it will receive graphite.
- It’s very important to make smooth gradients when shading. In most cases, dark tones do not flow directly into lighter tones, there are a lot of tones in between.
- A good tips is to start with the upper left corner and work your way down and to the right.
- You can also turn the ref and drawing upside down and draw much of the piece like this. Why? Because then you can see shapes much easier this way, and it could keep you from rushing through the drawing.
- Details make the piece come alive.
- Try not to blend over highlights. Keep them clean for best results.
- After a drawing is framed, the glare from graphite will be less obvious behind glass.
- Rushing through an area can ruin the whole piece so never ever rush.
- Finishing a small area at a time.
